My choise: 3 best sports books
2 -The Art of Captaincy
Mike Brearley
Precisely what you would hope for from the author, England’s most cerebral and considerate captain. Brearley is incisive on tactics but his measured, insightful appraisal of character and how the best captains harness disparate individuals with contrasting impulses is fascinating. Brearley concedes, that having Ian Botham, Geoffrey Boycott, David Gower and Bob Willis to call on is an enormous advantage but how he motivated a crushed cavalier, a monomaniac, an insouciant nonconformist and a diffident destroyer is the crux of the book. The lessons it imparts have been mined and adapted to myriad occupations but as Rodney Hogg put it, Brearley’s ‘degree in people’ is easier to read about than learn.
